Dental Care For Seniors

We are taught to take care of our teeth our whole life, many patients practice excellent oral health.  However, as you get older, you will need to make a few changes with your dental health based on your aging teeth and gums.  The biggest issue as a patient ages is tooth loss, should you lose a tooth, you can replace it with an artificial tooth; the problem with not replacing the missing tooth is that the other teeth can suffer and maybe even shift out of alignment.  You can visit your dentist to get dentures or partial dentures put in place of your missing tooth.

There are four different types of dentures that you can get sized on depending on your issue and the preference you have for your appearance.

  1. A fixed partial denture consists one or more false teeth that are placed beside the natural healthy teeth and are held together using these teeth. This type of denture cannot be taken out.
  2. A removable partial denture consist of the false teeth being held in place by a clamp and using the natural healthy teeth to hold it in place. This type of denture is removable and can be taken out for cleaning and at nighttime.
  3. If you loose all of your teeth than you can get complete dentures or Immediate dentures.
  4. You can also get dental implants, which are used to support false teeth.

Once you choose the appropriate type of denture for your daily needs, you will need to ensure that they are cleaned properly.  Dentures should be cleaned on a daily basis, morning and night, and should be soaked in a special cleaning solution that will be discussed with your dentist.  Dental implants can be cleaned just as your natural teeth are cleaned,

Keep in mind that you can get the same dental hygiene issues on dentures and implants that you get on natural teeth; such as gum disease, gingivitis, tartar build up.  Therefore it is very important that you continue your normal daily cleansing just as you would with your natural teeth.   Also ensure that you make regular visits to the dentist so that your teeth can be checked and ensure that any signs of issues can be detected and treated early.
